Night Goblins done... for now

I finally managed to finish my second regiment of Night Goblins. I manage to snatch about half an hours painting every evening after work and some longer stretches at the weekends. These thirty were easy enough to paint too as the models while excellent are rather simple. There is no extraneous details that need to be painted. I often wonder why Orcs and their ilk need so many pouches when going to battle, what exactly are they carrying?

I want to take a break from Night Goblins for the moment. I don't want to start into the next regiment of sixty spears and end up getting bored or annoyed halfway through. I think that will be my next unit taken from the pile. Its sheer size will be impressive even if I doubt that their performance will be. I have no idea what the new book will bring but I guess Goblins will remain cheap. So instead of a massive horde I am moving on to some Forest Goblins. I used to have an infantry regiment of these once upon a time. I have no clue where they ended up. Now I have forty Spider Riders and I would like to get some of them painted. A regiment of forty would look cool on the table but it might be a little excessive. I am going to convert them a little and I think ten is enough.

  1. These look really good, I admire a guy with dedication to paint checkerboards on goblin archers. I think some ground foliage would add to the unit, a little faded green would fit in nicely I think.

    1. I found the ground cover I am looking for, it is an old GW product that I guess is some form of green crumbled cork. Now I just need to figure out how to apply it sparsely enough across the bases.

The checks were needed as the models would look horribly plain without them. Having done them a few times before, especially on my 40k Orks, I can do them fairly competently and fast now.

  2. Looks good. That color scheme would look really nice with some fall looking foliage and likely fitting with forest goblins.

    1. Thanks, There will be mainly an autumnal feel to the bases with some faded lighter greens and then tufts/leaves. I am looking for some fitting flowers too though. Nothing major but just an added element.

  3. Wonderful work. I do love the scheme and the Checks. I agree with the others that a bit of foliage on the bases would enhance them even more.

I've been playing a Night Goblin army throughout 8th ed fantasy. So far I've been a jammy git and have won about 95% of the games I've played with them.

My secret: Maximum Fanatic Load-out and Preliminary Squig Wave.

It's worked so far. And When your fanatics are killing your own Goblins and the Squigs are blowing up and killing everything in sight... Well.... It's a laugh isn't it?

    1. I always fiund the threat of fanatics more effective than actually paying the points for them. I played Night Goblins exclusively through fourth and fifth edition. I definitely didn't win more than a third of my games.

I am awaiting the new plastic squig kits before I start considering using them. I actually just sold my hoppers and herders yesterday.

  4. Good work. I doubt I'll ever finish my goblin army, they are just too few points and thus too many models...

    1. I was surprised how quickly I managed to get through these. A few more regiments and I could easy do an all Goblin army. It is a little bit of a slog, I admit. However having the units finished on the table has proven a strong motivation.
